Amateur Radio

I’ve been involved in technology and communications for most of my career. Ironically, I didn’t get my license until just recently.

Amateur radio is an interesting hobby and is more affordable now than ever before.  W0UK, the Douglas County Amateur Radio Club (DCARC), is organizing an event late this summer that will allow young people to communicate with astronauts on the ISS (International Space Station). For people like me, there’s the ability to do things like mesh networks, telemetry (like a telemetry link to a UAV), and many other interesting things.

It’s not that hard to get your license. DCARC is sponsoring some education and a test session in April. The website is http://w0uk.com and there will be info on the site soon.

And, last but not least, amateur radio provides important services during emergencies.
