Where in Lawrence?

Now that I’m working back in Lawrence, I can wonder around downtown and take photos.

The LJW used to allow some of us to post to blogs which they gave visibility to on their front page. Here is a link In Simple Words

Here’s a photo I took today, it should be easy to guess where it was taken from if you’re familiar with the downtown area.

Amateur Radio

I’ve been involved in technology and communications for most of my career. Ironically, I didn’t get my license until just recently.

Amateur radio is an interesting hobby and is more affordable now than ever before.  W0UK, the Douglas County Amateur Radio Club (DCARC), is organizing an event late this summer that will allow young people to communicate with astronauts on the ISS (International Space Station). For people like me, there’s the ability to do things like mesh networks, telemetry (like a telemetry link to a UAV), and many other interesting things.

It’s not that hard to get your license. DCARC is sponsoring some education and a test session in April. The website is http://w0uk.com and there will be info on the site soon.

And, last but not least, amateur radio provides important services during emergencies.

Klamet country

The Klamath mountains are in eastern California and Oregon.

In old accounts, I sometimes see it spelled “Klamet”, as in this account of an expedition by Lt. Charles Wilkes in 1836.

The area is referred to as “Klamet country”. There is something I like about that.

Announcing in the quietest way possible

In this small little corner of the net, I’m posting a mostly complete version of the novel I’ve been working on for the last few years.

It may not be quite ready for prime time, but it has been long enough, here it is:

How do you go from an average teenager to the most famous guy on the planet? It all started when he helped a young man he found unconsious in the woods. Somehow he ended up helping save the planet and they’re calling him a hero. Oh, by the way, the planet’ not Earth

Simple Realizations

There are 3 kinds of people:

  1. Those who accept the status quo
  2. Those who recognize the status quo as insane
  3. Those who recognize the insanity of the status quo and are willing to devote themselves to changing it

Lawrence has a subreddit on Reddit

Recently, Reddit has become the site I visit most frequently.  And, indeed,  Lawrence has a subreddit.  Not a lot going on there yet, but I suspect that may change.

Is college worth it?

This article in the NY times makes a convincing (to me) argument.

Boycott Black Friday

Let those who work at the big chain stores, usually for close to minimum wage, have their holiday. See this story from CNN

The more things change…

Ralph Gage’s tweet of a William Allen White editorial reminded me of an event in my life.

From 1997 to 1999 I had the good fortune to work at Kennedy Space Center on the Space Shuttle Program.  I made no secret of my Kansas roots and gladly bore the good-natured teasing about “Toto” and tornadoes.  You may recall that during that period the Kansas State School Board raised objections to the teaching of evolution in our schools.

About that time the teasing stopped.
